When to Book Fall Family Photos on the North Shore
The light changes here in the second week of September. It drops lower, goes gold almost an hour earlier, and everything from Gillson Park to the Winnetka bluffs starts looking like the best version of itself. It lasts about six weeks.
That is the whole reason fall books the way it does.
The short answer
If you want a September or October session on the North Shore, reserve by mid-August.
There are roughly eight weekends between Labor Day and the first hard freeze. Two usable evening slots on each one. Every family photographer in Glenview, Wilmette and Winnetka is working from that same small calendar, and the weekend golden hour slots go first.
If holiday cards are the goal, work backward
Cards mail in late November. Most print shops want ten to fourteen days. Your gallery arrives two weeks after we shoot. Then add a week to actually choose the photos, because everyone underestimates that part.
That puts your last comfortable session date around the third week of October. Later still works. It just stops being relaxed.
What each month actually looks like
September. Still green, warm light, mild evenings. Kids are back in a routine and not yet worn down by it. The best month for families with little ones.
Early October. The peak. The trees turn along the Kenilworth side streets and on the bluffs above the lake, and the light is the best it will be all year.
Late October. Unpredictable. Beautiful when it lands, cold and flat when it doesn't. Good if you can stay flexible on the date.
November. Bare, quiet, and underrated. The window is short and most people have already mailed their cards, which is exactly why it's wide open.
A note on time of day
We shoot in the last stretch of daylight, and in fall that window slides earlier every week. In September it's a comfortable evening. By late October it lands right around dinner.
So if you have a toddler with an early bedtime, book September. I can direct almost anything in a session, with or without the golden hour.
Two logistics to call out
Bring layers, not coats. A coat hides everyone.
And if you're deciding between a park and your own backyard, the backyard is the right answer more often than people expect. Especially with kids under four.
